Have you ever wondered why La Bella Luce is never empty? As soon as a piece of furniture sales a new piece is there to replace it.

I have been traveling through Europe for the past 12 years looking for treasures to bring to you.

How to Make a Home “Truly” Yours

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Over the years I have lived in a great variety of homes with a wide range of sizes and styles. It is always a challenge to let your personality come through no matter what the structure looks like.
This past summer we moved from Italy into a beautiful Colonial style home in Northern Virginia. We bought the home sight unseen with only the photos from the listing to go by.  By applying a few simple design rules I transformed their home in to ours … same house, just a different flare!

Became our dining room….

Do not be limited by the existing lay out. As you see above, I switched the dining room and living room to accommodate a 13 foot table and make the living room a bit more cozy. There was only recessed lighting in the “new” dining room so I added two identical chandeliers to help anchor the space.

I painted the dining room a creamy yellow and white, switched the ceiling light for a chandelier, and added long curtain panels to add warmth and height.

The family Room is a tall large room that can be hard to warm up. I decided not to do window treatments in this space since the house came with plantation shutters and we love the light and airy feel of it. A large Iraqi silk rug and large scale furniture helps fill the space, while an oversized antique Venetian chandelier anchors it.

And Ours!

The office took a bit more work. I removed the wall paper border, added a chandelier, painted the walls, ceiling all of the trim work, and doors.  It was worth the work!

And the office today…

Small places need a big statement. I turned this little powder room into an art gallery. It added an element of surprise and  it makes for a topic of conversation.

I am very lucky to be married to a very handy man; I dream it and he makes it! By moving the laundry room to the basement we were able to create a mud room off of the entrance from the garage. Instead of removing the wall paper we primed and painted the top portion, applied beadboarding 3/4 of the way down, added a few built-ins, and viola!

The master bedroom is absolutely my favorite room in the house. I love the warm colors and soft cotton fabrics. This room was quite easy to warm up…chandelier, paint, fabric!

And after…little space, big statement!

One of my design philosophies is, “If it is not meant to be seen, don’t show it.”  I like to hide my toiletries behind custom made shower curtains and of course a window treatment to match. The stained glass panels provide privacy while allowing some of the light to filter in.

In the guest bedroom, the floor length curtain panels and chandelier add height and warmth to the room.

In the third bedroom, raising the curtains all the way to the ceiling and just outside of the window frame, I was able to get the most out of the natural light. This method makes the window appear larger than it is.

Each room has its own personality, just like the people who occupy them. Instead of buying “run of the mill” contemporary furniture for my teenage daughter’s bedroom,  I decided to paint the antique furniture white. Even the chandelier got a fresh coat!

The outside of the house got a makeover, too!

Just the smallest of details can make a huge difference, like simply painting the rails of the deck area white.

The fire pit is by far the BEST investment we have made in this home. Some things you can do yourself and others you just need to call in the professionals!

 Before and After

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Your home should reflect who you are, tell your story. We only have one life to live, so make sure that you are living the way you want to live NOW not when the children are gone and your family stops moving. You never know what tomorrow may bring!
